Zanzibar Central Coordinating Mechanism pledges support to PSI
Dar es Salaam 30th, April 2010…
ZANZIBAR’S Central Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) is keen to work closely with PSI to ensure that Salama condoms are widely accepted and used in the Isles.
“We (CCM) will do all we can and where necessary seek the intervention of the Revolutionary Government to get rid of any obstacles that may hinder distribution of condoms in Zanzibar,” said Dr Juma Muhsin, at a visit of Zanzibar CCM members to PSI head office in Dar es Salaam.
The CCM members acknowledged that people in the Isles were still shy to discuss condom use openly advising PSI to first seek address the stigma as a stepping stone towards achieving greater acceptance of condom use in the Isles.
The team was reacting to a presentation by the PSI HIV program director, John Wanyancha, who among other things, said working with partners to increase condom use and availability in Zanzibar and in Tanzania mainland was one PSI’s strategic agenda in 2010.
Country CCM are central to the Global Fund's commitment to
local ownership and
participatory decision-making. These
country-level multi-stakeholder partnerships develop and submit grant proposals to the Global Fund based on priority needs at the national level. After grant approval, they oversee progress during implementation.
CCM include representatives from both the
public and private sectors, including governments, multilateral or bilateral agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, private businesses and people living with the diseases.
For each grant, the Country Coordinating Mechanism nominates one or more public or private organizations to serve as Principal Recipients.
Tanzania National Coordinating Mechanism (TNCM) is the counterpart of Zanzibar’s CMM on the mainland. PSI’s application for the Global Fund Round 4 Rolling Continuation Channel as
Principal Recipient was done by the TNCM. The core functions of CCM or the TNCM for that matter include;
- Coordinate the development and submission of national proposals.
- Nominate the Principal Recipient.
- Oversee implementation of the approved grant and submit requests for continued funding.
- Approve any reprogramming and submit requests for continued funding.
- Ensure linkages between GF grants and other national health and development programs.
