Dr Janee receive OBE
The Director for Maternal and Child Health Programs and Initiatives with PSI/Tanzania Dr Jane Miller has been awarded an Order of British Empire (OBE) following her tireless research and jobs in a bid to eliminate malaria in Tanzania and around the globe.
Dr Jane was presented the award by Prince Charles of England on behalf of the Queen on the 9th of July 2010 at the Queen's birthday honors.
Speaking about the award Dr Jane said she is very proud to receive the dream award and being the first person in her family to have ever dominated and win such kind of award.
“I am very proud of my self, my parents and the whole family. Since I was very young I kept on hearing about it and to have actually received it now makes a very special part of my history,” she noted.
Dr Jane said since the news of her receiving the award was published in UK Times newspaper her parents and her self have been receiving congratulations from all parts of the world.
Responding a question on weather she has ever thought that one day she will be standing before the Queen and receiving a national award Dr Jane said no and that the award has come as a very big surprise to her.
“It is a total surprise to me, I did not expect to get it but it has energized me to work more and fight malaria till it is fully eliminated.”
She said the award mean a lot to her and to PSI/Tanzania as it send out clear message that her job and that of PSI/Tanzania are being recognized and appreciated by British Government and other reputable malaria institutions.
Speaking about the award and the impact that is going to have in the fight against malaria, Dr Jane said that she hopes that malaria has now become much interested subject and will receive more attention and maybe bring more funding to fight it.
She is very thankful to all people that have helped her to be where she is today and in particular her parents, her professor at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Prof. Targett who advised her to carry on the subject, PSI/Tanzania Deputy Executive Director Romans Mtung’e who support and worked with her in early stages of producing” insecticide treatment kit for mosquito nets (Ngao) and her husband Jonathan Sutton for tireless support.

“OBE stands for Officer in The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. It is one of the highest honors a civilian in Great Britain can obtain, short of being knighted. There are five levels and this one is the fourth from the top.
