• Distributed half a billion condoms since 1993

Dar es Salaam, Friday February 12th, 2010 ... PSI/Tanzania, a not-for-profit organization operating in the country since 1993 today announce the launch of its new look to better reflect its fundamental values and commitment to providing critical products and services to vulnerable people in the country.

A new logo, tagline, and visual identity reflect the discipline and heart of PSI at an exciting time in its 15 years of being in Tanzania.

The event went hand in hand with the celebration of half a billion Salama condoms and Ngao distribution in the country by the organization since 1993.

Speaking at the launch event held in Dar es Salaam, the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Hon. Prof. David Mwakyusa said he felt very honoured to officially launch the exciting new look of PSI/Tanzania and celebrating ‘half a billion’ milestones for HIV and Malaria prevention in Tanzania.

Minister Mwakyusa said the achievements that were celebrated are great especially when considering the health impact that socially marketed health products and services have brought to some of the most vulnerable Tanzanians, and which support the government in achieving millennium development goals.

He said through collaboration between the government and non governmental organizations such as PSI/Tanzania, in the past 10 years, Tanzania has seen some notable successes in the fight against HIV/AIDS and Malaria.
The Minister said: “Between 2004 and 2008, there has been an overall reduction in national HIV prevalence from 6.7% to 5.7%. On mainland Tanzania, all cause under five mortality has declined by nearly 40% since 1999, largely due to the decline in malaria deaths which dropped from 120,000 in 2005 to 60,000 in 2008.”

Minister Prof. Mwakyusa said the social marketing of condoms and insecticide retreatment kits have contributed significantly to the results and that the two have been an important component of his ministry’s strategy over the last decade.
He said, “Successes like this can be delivered in other areas – as we aim towards our target of reduce maternal mortality by two thirds and to increase the contraceptive prevalence rate to 60% by 2015; we also aim to increase access to clean and safe water, and reduce child mortality from neglected diseases such as diarrhea.”

At the event Prof. Mwakyusa bought one pack of Salama condoms to mark it a total of half a billion condom distributed by PSI/Tanzania since 1993. The minister was later joined by other invitees to buy condoms which were available at the venue.

Speaking about organization’s new look to the invitees, PSI/Tanzania Executive Director, Daniel Crapper, said the new look is inspired by the partnerships that have contributed to the organization’s success over the past 15 years, and within the internal PSI network of country programs and with donors and partner organizations that have enabled PSI to change behaviors and save lives.

About the new look Crapper said, “It graphically symbolizes PSI’s openness to partnership for measurable results in improving the lives of people we serve. It also demonstrates the balance we seek to achieve between taking business-minded, evidence-based approaches while emphasizing the importance of the impact of changing individual behaviours to live healthier lives.”

He said their new tagline that read: ‘Healthy Lives. Measurable Results.’ is a compact description of the spirit of what they do, how they do it and the ultimate aim of their work.

The PSI Director committed: “To help provide sustained health impacts to the people we serve today and in the future, we will continue to nurture long-term market development, build local capacity and empower behavior change. As a trusted partner/donor, thank you for your support and shared commitment.
